iPad review (late 2012)
Welcome to the new new iPad, same as the old new iPad. Well, mostly, anyway. It was less than eight months ago that Apple grafted a Retina display onto its world-conquering tablet, giving every other slate on the market resolution envy, while enchanting gadget lovers with world-class performance and battery life.
Now, it's obsolete. Put out to pasture just as it was hitting its stride and replaced by this, the fourth-generation iPad -- still just called "new iPad." Other than a Lightning connector on the bottom it's visually indistinguishable from its predecessor. Even its starting MSRP of $499 stays the same. But, on the inside where it counts, is the new, fire-breathing A6X processor. Could this be possibly worth buying a second new iPad in just one year, or could this perhaps be the one you've been waiting for? Hold on to your wallets and click on through to find out.

Ford up $1.6B in Q3 thanks to record profits in North America
Filed under: Ford, Earnings/Financials
Now that the bell has rung to signal the end of Q3 2012, Ford is standing in the ring with both hands in the air like Rocky: The company's overall profit of $1.63 billion for the last three months is nearly equal to its entire 2011 total of $1.94B. Those numbers come thank to the record-breaking pretax operating profit in North America of $2.33B on revenues of $19.5B, the third straight quarter that The Blue Oval has crossed the two-billion mark. Customers are paying more, on average, for Ford vehicles, another contributor to the company maintaining double-digit profit margins on its products.
True, there are a couple of bruises. Losses in Europe continue, with The Continent suffering an even larger decline in pretax revenues to $468 million, and European revenue has dropped to $5.8 billion compared to $7.8 billion a year ago. South America is another sore spot, with exchange rates and currency restrictions being blamed for a 23-percent decline in revenue to $2.3 billion and a screeching 97-percent shrinkage in pretax operating profit to $9 million, down from $276 million in the same quarter last year. Global revenue is also down three percent to $32.1 billion.
But North America's numbers have kept the tide rising, even with the rise in the company's North American tax rate to 30 percent, a 20-percent jump over last year. Ford's prognosis for the rest of the year is for strong results and even greater production - 1.5 million in Q4 versus 1.4 million in Q3 - even with expanded costs to market the new models it is introducing as well as continued challenges in Europe. That means great news for two of our three domestic automakers, following the Chrysler announcement of an 80-percent jump in Q3 profit to $381 million. General Motors will report tomorrow. For the inner CFO in you, Ford's number-filled press release is below.

Are You Online Banking Yet? Here Are a Few Reasons Why You Should
Do you remember when the internet started and most of us were apprehensive about doing little things on the web like publishing photos of ourselves or shopping online? Back then the concept of sharing where you are and what you're eating would have been preposterous. And banking online? Insane. We Foursquare, Instagram, and some of us even bank almost exclusively online. More

Editorial: Apple vs. everyone
It's a big storm, moving slowly. A gigantic span of ferocious swirl meets a front of chilly resistance. The effect of that collision is amplified by powerful tidal influence. Upheavals and surges swamp the landscape. Many people are displaced; countless others stay with the familiar.
Also, in the real world, some nasty weather is happening. But I'm talking about the tech industry of the last five business days, which has aligned and concentrated its forces in a crystal-clear demonstration, if one were needed, that mobile is where the bets are placed and futures will be won and lost.
Apple is at the eye of the storm, where its devoted legions expect it, but no longer as a pioneer. Defending its territory rather than breaking new ground, the post-Jobs company did something its late and fabled leader scorned, split hairs to justify it, engaged in implicit combat with four competitors, ticked off some of its best customers and was squeezed by inexorable pressure of a quickly evolving industry.

From Idol to idle? Not exactly: Jennifer Lopez, who announced her departure from American Idol today on co-star Ryan Seacrest?s radio show, said that ? as much as she loved the TV gig ? she just felt like she needed to ?get back to doing the other things that I do.?
That includes her singing career, which soared again after she started appearing on the reality show, and her film career, which, if we?re being honest, is still just so-so. (Although, she does voice a part in the upcoming Ice Age: Continental Drift.) The 42-year-old also told Ryan that she wanted to devote a little more time to her twins, Emme and Max, now 4. ?As the kids get a little bigger, it started feeling like it was a lot,? she explained, ?and something had to give.?
Nevertheless, Jennifer seemed genuinely ambivalent about her decision. ?When I signed on to Idol, I signed on to do one year. I ended up doing two years because I just fell so in love with the show.? Luckily for fans, this isn?t the end of the road. Jennifer said that she?d be more than happy to appear on the show again, whether as a mentor or an audience member. ?I?m always going to be here,? she promised.

Luke Rockhold injured and Strikeforce takes another hit
Strikeforce middleweight champion Luke Rockhold has pulled out his Nov. 3 bout with Lorenz Larkin. According to MMA Fighting, Rockhold sustained a wrist injury.
This is the second hit to the card as Frank Mir pulled out of his bout with Strikeforce heavyweight grand prix champion Daniel Cormier. Weeks after Mir's withdrawal, Cormier is still without an opponent.
Rockhold's injury could not come at a worse time for the promotion owned by Zuffa, the parent company for the UFC. Late in September, they canceled a card when lightweight champion Gilbert Melendez was injured days before the fight and Showtime decided not to air the event.
Now, they have another injured champion and the two biggest fights on the card are in jeopardy.
