Apple needs to redefine itself, but that shouldn't take long

Image
We know that Apple can be OCD-ish about dictionaries at times, but is any brave Cupertino intern ready to step up and run the gauntlet? Apple's definition of itself in its own Dictionary application is looking dusty, while all it really needs is a quick mention of the company's latest gifts to the world -- and we don't just mean the Patent Wars.

[Thanks, Ishmaeel]

Amazon stores 1,700 human genomes in the cloud

Amazon stores 1,700 human genomes in the cloudNot content with speeding up web browsing and hosting federal data, Amazon Web Services are now helping in the fight against disease. Bezos' crew is donating a chunk of free cloud storage to the 1000 Genomes project, which aims to make it easier for scientists to search for genetic variations linked to diseases. These gene-hunters can also use Amazon's Elastic Cloud Compute service to analyze data and discover patterns, although those functions won't come gratis. The DNA sequences of 1,700 mostly anonymous Homo sapiens from around the world have already been logged, but the project has to upload another 1,000 samples before it meets statistical requirements. If it ever needs fresh volunteers, perhaps a free USB gene sequencer and a Prime subscription might do the trick?

Kansas could see another arts funding showdown

House and Senate negotiators were close Friday to finishing work on a bill creating a new Creative Industries Commission that would oversee state efforts to promote the arts. Brownback has argued that arts programs should rely more heavily on private funds, and last year, he vetoed the entire budget of the Arts Commission, making Kansas the only state to eliminate its arts funding. The governor hasn't backed away from his position on arts programs and says state tax dollars should be used for core government functions instead, Brownback spokeswoman Sherriene Jones-Sontag said. Sarah Carkhuff Fizell, a spokeswoman for Kansas Citizens for the Arts, said arts advocates hope the new jobs will allow the Creative Industries Commission to draft a plan to regain federal funding by mid-2013. Fizell said advocates remain concerned about a potential veto of the new commission's funding but are hopeful that Brownback won't eliminate the money, noting that "he decided to restart the conversation."

Bump Pay lets you tap a friend for cash

Image
Taking cues from an ING Direct app that used its API, Bump Technologies has developed its own version of the mobile payments software, enabling phone-to-phone "Bump" transactions using PayPal. Yes, PayPal. That minor processing detail aside, the service appears to offer a fun solution for simplifying the fairly painful process of paying the check at group meals, or splitting a tank of gas with a friend. Both you and your bud need to have the app installed before you can beam that green, and there's no option to send payments remotely, though you could always use plain ole vanilla PayPal for that. The app is free, and if you have a checking account linked you won't have to deal with any fees. Bump Pay is iOS only "at launch" (read: it could be making its way to Android as well), so for now you'll need to bump the App Store to get folks paid.
