Modern Stress, Ancient Reactions and Creating Positive Responses

Why does stress feel so disempowering? I'd wager it has to do with the fact so much of stress happens automatically. None of us consciously decides "hey, today I think I'm going to be stressed! I think I'm going to tense my shoulders and breathe way too quickly and run a thousand negative thoughts through my head every single minute until I fitfully hit the hay tonight!"
